FAQs

Phoenix Chiropractor, Dr. Edward Madrid has been treating car and auto accident victims for over 35 years. He has successfully treated 1,000’s of automobile accident and car accident cases.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including neck pain, back pain, sciatica, headaches, herniated discs, whiplash, sports injuries, auto accident injuries, shoulder pain, hip pain, knee pain, arthritis-related joint pain, and many other conditions affecting the spine and extremities.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit includes a thorough health history, orthopedic and neurological examination, chiropractic evaluation, review of any previous imaging, discussion of your diagnosis, and a personalized treatment plan. When appropriate, treatment may begin during your first appointment.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?

No. Arizona is a direct-access state, meaning you may schedule an appointment without a physician referral.

Can chiropractic care help after an auto accident?

Yes. Auto accidents often cause injuries that may not become painful until hours or even days after the collision. Early evaluation can help identify injuries before they become apparent and may improve recovery.

How soon after a car accident should I be evaluated?

Ideally, you should be evaluated within 24–72 hours, even if you feel relatively well. Many soft tissue injuries develop gradually, and documenting your condition early is important for your health and, when applicable, insurance claims.

Will I need X-rays or an MRI?

Not necessarily. Many conditions can be diagnosed through a comprehensive examination. If imaging is medically indicated, we will explain why and help determine whether X-rays or an MRI are appropriate.

Can a chiropractor help with a herniated disc?

Yes. Many patients with disc herniations improve with conservative care. Treatment depends on the severity of the disc injury, your symptoms, and your neurological examination. We develop individualized treatment plans designed to reduce pain, improve function, and help you return to normal activities. Most disc herniations that do not require surgery can respond well to chiropractic care.

What is the difference between a bulging disc and a herniated disc?

A bulging disc occurs when the outer portion of the disc extends beyond the normal boundaries of the bone but remains intact. A herniated disc occurs when the outer fibers tear, allowing the inner disc material to protrude. While both may cause pain, not every bulging or herniated disc produces symptoms. Bulging discs tend to be chronic, while disc herniations can be chronic or caused by an acute injury.

Can MRI findings explain my symptoms?

Sometimes—but not always. MRI findings must be correlated with your medical history and physical examination. Many people have MRI abnormalities without pain, while others experience significant symptoms with only subtle imaging findings. Like X-rays, MRIs are diagnostic tools used when medically necessary. Proper interpretation requires correlating the imaging results with your clinical presentation.

What makes your office different?

Dr. Madrid combines over 35 years of clinical experience with advanced postgraduate training in spinal MRI interpretation, orthopedic and neurological examination, and evidence-based chiropractic care. Our focus is on identifying the true cause of your pain for lasting results rather than simply treating symptoms.

Why is an accurate diagnosis so important?

Pain is a symptom—not the diagnosis. Two patients may experience similar pain in the same area but have completely different underlying conditions. Identifying the true source of your symptoms allows treatment to address the cause rather than simply masking discomfort.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Yes. Chiropractic care is considered one of the safest forms of conservative treatment for musculoskeletal conditions when performed by a licensed chiropractor. Every treatment is customized to the individual patient.

Will chiropractic adjustments hurt?

Most patients find adjustments comfortable and often experience improved movement afterward. Some patients may notice mild soreness similar to beginning a new exercise program, which usually resolves within one or two days.

How many treatments will I need?

Treatment recommendations depend on your diagnosis, the severity and duration of your condition, your overall health, and how your body responds to care. Our goal is always to help you recover as efficiently as possible.

Can chiropractic care help me avoid surgery?

Many spinal and joint conditions respond well to conservative care. While surgery is sometimes necessary, many patients improve without surgical intervention. If your condition requires another type of medical treatment, we will discuss appropriate referral options. Dr. Madrid has a network of medical specialists who understand the needs of his patients.

Can chiropractic care help prevent future injuries?

Yes. Improving spinal mobility, joint function, muscle balance, posture, flexibility, and movement patterns may help reduce the risk of future injuries while improving overall function.

Why do I still have pain even though my X-rays were normal?

Standard X-rays primarily show bones. They do not clearly visualize muscles, ligaments, spinal discs, nerves, tendons, or many soft tissue injuries. A normal X-ray does not necessarily mean that no injury exists.

Do you accept insurance?

We work with many insurance plans and also care for patients involved in automobile accidents and personal injury cases. Our staff will gladly help verify your benefits whenever possible.
